“Michael Slays the Dragon”
For Movement 4: Offertory (From The Victoria Requiem)
16 x 16 inches unframed, 20 x 20 inches framed
Monotype print, oil pastel, & graphite
Now that we have meditated on those who lived before, we move into a great drama: The victory over death. Searing red, this scene is active–no longer a passive blue. The gold shooting down the center represents Michael slaying the dragon, as referenced in the lyrics, and as traditionally illustrated with a long spear piercing a dragon at the bottom center. This is a story of hellfire, brimstone, deliverance, battle, and Christ descending to Hell and back for humanity.
